How to use it
A shortened form, usable after a CLAUSE (unlike 「を前提として」, which only attaches to a noun). Business conversation.
- 「~前提で」 = proceeding on the assumption that A is already certain. Its strength: it can attach after a CLAUSE, not just a noun.
- Close in meaning to 「を前提として/にして」 (N1-160/161) but more flexible and common in business contexts.
- Often paired with 「話を進める (proceed with the discussion) / 計画を立てる (make a plan)」.
Examples
彼が参加する前提で、席を用意しておこう。
Let’s set out a seat on the assumption that he’ll attend.
予算が通る前提で、話を進めてもよろしいですか。
May I proceed on the assumption that the budget will be approved?
Keep in mind
- Can attach after a clause.
- Commonly used in business conversation.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong彼が来る前提で、来なかった。
On the assumption that he would come, he didn't come.
Correct彼が来る前提で、準備した。
