How to use it
A classical prohibition. Found on signs, regulations, and proverbs — not used in speech.
- 「Vる+べからず」 = forbidden to do: 「立ち入るべからず」 (no entry), 「初心忘るべからず」 (never forget your original resolve).
- The modifier form is 「べからざる+N」: 「許すべからざる行為」 (an unforgivable act).
- 「する」 becomes 「すべからず」 (not 「するべからず」) — a classical trace, often tested.
Examples
No entry except for authorized personnel.
Never forget your original purpose.
Keep in mind
- Attaches to the dictionary form: 「立ち入るべからず」, not the nai-form.
- Only used in writing and signs; conversation uses 「~
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
Correct
べからず connects to the dictionary form, not after ない.
Exam tips
