How to use it
Points out an inherent BAD TENDENCY of a person or thing. A remark about a long-term tendency, not a one-off occurrence.
- 「Vる/Nの+きらいがある」 = has the unfortunate habit/tendency of...: 「彼は人の話を聞かないきらいがある」.
- Always negative. You cannot say 「よく勉強するきらいがある」 — for a good trait, use 「傾向がある」.
- Often accompanied by 「どうも・とかく・ともすると」 to emphasize its recurring nature: 「彼はとかく物事を悲観的に考えるきらいがある」.
Examples
彼は人の話を聞かないきらいがある。
He tends not to listen to others.
この議論は細部に偏るきらいがある。
This discussion tends to focus too much on details.
Keep in mind
- A noun attaches via 「の」: 「独断のきらいがある」; a verb attaches directly.
- Used only for something bad — for a neutral tendency, use 「傾向がある」.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong聞かないのきらいがある。
Correct聞かないきらいがある。
The plain form of a verb attaches directly to きらいがある.
Exam tips
- 「きらいがある」 = has a BAD tendency (long-term); for a good trait, use 「傾向がある」.
