How to use it
Affirms that just hearing about it, one can already picture it. Almost only used with 想像 and 察する.
- 「想像にかたくない/察するにかたくない」 = not hard to imagine, easily guessable. These two combinations are nearly fixed.
- 「かたくない」 is written 「難くない」 — the negative of 「難い」 (difficult), so the whole phrase means “not difficult at all”.
- Used to express sympathy for someone else's circumstances, in writing: 「遺族の心情は察するにかたくない」.
Examples
彼の苦労は想像にかたくない。

被害者のご家族の気持ちは察するにかたくない。

Keep in mind
- The particle is 「に」: 「想像にかたくない」, not 「想像をかたくない」.
- Only used with 想像 (imagine) / 察する (guess); other verbs sound unnatural.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong想像をかたくない。
Correct想像にかたくない。
The active noun goes with にかたくない.
