How to use it

Obligation, duty. A formal, somewhat archaic written form of 「~なければならない」.

  • 「Vねばならない」 = must…: 「我々は事実を認めねばならない」.
  • The conjugation is like 「ざるを得ない」: drop 「ない」 then attach — and 「する」 becomes 「せねば」, NOT 「しねば」.
  • Written/speech style; everyday conversation uses 「なければならない」 or 「なきゃ」.

Examples

  • We must take this fact seriously.

  • To make the flight, we have to hurry.

Keep in mind

  • する → せねばならない.
  • Not used in casual conversation.

Common mistakes

  • Wrongもっと勉強(べんきょう)しねばならない。

    I must study more.

    「する」 conjugates irregularly to 「せねば」.

  • Wrong(友達(ともだち)に)もう帰(かえ)らねばならない。

I have to go home now.

    Correct(友達(ともだち)に)もう帰(かえ)らなきゃ。
