Forming it

Noun英語 → 英語のみならず
na-adjective有名 → 有名であるのみならず

How to use it

Adds something that GOES FAR BEYOND what was already stated. Formal written style, an upgraded version of 「だけでなく」.

  • 「AのみならずB も」 = not only A but also B: 「彼は英語のみならず、フランス語も話せる」.
  • The second clause MUST have 「も/まで/さえ」. Both clauses go the same direction and B is stronger than A.
  • A noun attaches directly; a na-adjective needs 「である」. Written style — conversation uses 「だけでなく」.

Examples

  • He speaks not only English but also French fluently.

  • This restaurant not only tastes good but is also reasonably priced.

Keep in mind

  • The second clause needs 「も」.
  • A na-adjective attaches via 「である」.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong英語(えいご)のみならず、フランス語(ご)が話(はな)せる。

Not only English but French can also be spoken.

    Correct英語(えいご)のみならず、フランス語(ご)も話(はな)せる。

The second clause must have 「も」.

  • Wrong有名(ゆうめい)のみならず、実力(じつりょく)もある。

Not only famous but also has real ability.

    Correct有名(ゆうめい)であるのみならず、実力(じつりょく)もある。

    A na-adjective attaches via 「である」.

Exam tips
