Forming it

Group II
Irregular

How to use it

Forced by circumstances to do something even though unwilling. Written style, a reluctant tone.

  • 「Vざるを得ない」 = have no choice but to: 「締め切りが近いので、残業せざるを得ない」.
  • Attaches to the ない form with 「ない」 dropped: 「乗らない → 乗らざるを得ない」. The biggest trap is 「する」 → 「せざるを得ない」, NOT 「しざるを得ない」.
  • Different from 「なければならない」 (a neutral obligation): 「ざるを得ない」 always carries a sense of reluctance forced by external circumstances.

Examples

  • The deadline is near, so I have no choice but to work overtime.

  • The trains stopped, so I had no choice but to take a taxi.

  • With the evidence at hand, I have no choice but to admit the facts.

Keep in mind

  • Connects to the ない form with 「ない」 dropped, not the dictionary form.

Common mistakes

I had no choice but to take a taxi.

Attaches to the ない form with 「ない」 dropped — 「乗ら」, not the dictionary form.

  • Wrong

    「する」 conjugates irregularly to 「せざる」.

  • Wrong

There's no choice but to cancel it.

    Correct

Since there is evidence, I have no choice but to admit it.

This pattern emphasizes RELUCTANCE forced by circumstances; it is not used for something done happily and willingly.
