Forming it

Verb行く → 行かない → 行かなければならない
i-adjective安い → 安くなければならない
Spoken contraction~なきゃ (from なければ), ~なくちゃ (from なくては)
na-adjective / Noun静か → 静かでなければならない

How to use it

Expresses obligation, something that must be done.

  • The structure follows a "double negative" logic: なければ (if [one] doesn't do it) + ならない (then it won't do) = "must do it". Vietnamese speakers may find this roundabout, but understanding this logic makes it stick firmly.
  • Distinguish the 4 variants that N4 often tests: ならない carries an objective rule/regulation nuance, formal, common in writing; いけない is more about a specific circumstance, more subjective, common in speech. As for なくては vs なければ, they are nearly the same, with なくては leaning more toward spoken language.
  • The contracted forms ~なきゃ and ~なくちゃ are extremely common in casual conversation, and the ending is often dropped entirely: もう行かなきゃ (gotta go now). But NEVER use this form with a boss or a customer.
  • Context: ~なければなりません is safe to use in any polite situation. ~なきゃ is only used with friends and when talking to oneself.

Examples

  • I have to prepare this document by tomorrow.

  • Foreigners must always carry their passport.

  • Oh, it is already eight. I have to hurry.

Keep in mind

  • Also applies to adjectives and nouns, not just verbs — this is the "extension" compared to N5: 部屋は静かでなければなりません.
  • Don't confuse this with ~なくてもいい (N4-085) — that means "no need to", the complete opposite meaning.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong毎日(まいにち)、日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)しなければなりましょう。

I have to study Japanese every day.

    Correct毎日(まいにち)、日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)しなければなりません。

なる here is always in the negative form なりません/ならない — there is no なりましょう form in this pattern.

  • Wrong社長(しゃちょう)、明日(あした)までに資料(しりょう)を作(つく)らなきゃですよ。

Director, the document has to be finished by tomorrow.

    Correct社長(しゃちょう)、明日(あした)までに資料(しりょう)をお作(つく)りいただけますでしょうか。

~なきゃ is extremely casual spoken language; using it with a company director is a serious breach of etiquette.

Exam tips

  • N4 questions often require choosing between なければなりません (must) and なくてもいいです (don't need to) — read the sentence context carefully.
