- 「~にしては」 takes a specific REFERENCE POINT (first time, a newcomer…), then states a result that GOES AGAINST the expectation from that reference: "compared to… it's actually…".
- The reference point must be CLEAR and specific. The second clause must be something that deviates/is unexpected relative to the standard.
- Close to 「わりに」 but 「にしては」 needs a specific reference/category; 「わりに」 compares by degree/proportion.
For a first try, it was done well.
For someone who has lived in Japan for ten years, his Japanese is poor.
For a beginner, she swims very well.
For a student, he studies hard.
The clause after 「にしては」 must GO AGAINST the expectation from the standard (a student studying hard is expected, not a contrast).
-
For a newcomer, he is very steady.
A noun attaches DIRECTLY to 「にしては」, without adding 「の」.
-
For this price, it’s tasty.
The comparison standard should be a specific noun; a bare adjective sounds more natural with 「わりに」.
-
For a beginner, it’s really bad.
The second clause must DEVIATE from expectation; "a beginner being bad" matches expectation, so this pattern isn't used.
- 「にしては」 = compared to a SPECIFIC standard, goes against expectation; needs a clear reference point.
