How to use it
Same meaning as 「どこにも~ないです」 but conjugates the verb to the ません form — used when being formal.
- Often paired with the existence verbs 「ある・いる」: 「どこにもありません」「どこにもいません」.
- Past tense 「~ませんでした」: 「どこにもありませんでした」.
Examples
あの猫はどこにもいません。
That cat is nowhere to be found.
お金はどこにも置いていません。
I haven’t left the money anywhere.
Keep in mind
- Same meaning as 「~ないです」, only differs in nuance/formality.
Common mistakes
-
Wrongあの猫はどこにもいますません。
That cat is nowhere to be seen.
Correctあの猫はどこにもいません。
The polite negative drops 「ます」 and adds 「ません」: います → いません.
-
Wrongあの猫はどこかにいません。
That cat is nowhere to be seen.
Correctあの猫はどこにもいません。
「どこか」 = somewhere (some unspecified place exists); a total negation must use 「どこにも」.
Exam tips
- どこにも + ある/いる → negating existence.
