How to use it
Negation about EXISTENCE in a place: searched everywhere but there's none/it's not found.
- 「にも」 attaches to existence/presence: 「どこにもない」 = there's none anywhere.
- Different from 「どこへも」 (not GOING anywhere) and 「どこでも」 (anywhere is fine, affirmative).
Examples
Umbrellas aren’t sold anywhere.
He can’t be found anywhere.
Keep in mind
- The formal version is 「どこにも~ません」.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
Umbrellas aren't sold anywhere at all.
Correct
「どこでも」 is only used in an affirmative clause; a negative sentence must use 「どこにも」.
-
Wrong
Umbrellas aren't sold anywhere at all.
Correct
Once you've switched to the
Exam tips
- にも = doesn't EXIST anywhere; へも = doesn't GO anywhere.
