Japanese grammar
What does ~(よ)うと思う mean? Japanese grammar N3
~(よ)うと思う means plan to ~; intend to ~.
| Level (estimated, JLPT framework) | N3 |
|---|---|
| Structure | V意向形 + と思う V意向形 + と思っている |
| Romaji | (yo)utoomou |
| Meaning | plan to ~; intend to ~ |
Forming it
| Just decided | 寝る → 早く寝ようと思います |
|---|---|
| Already planned | 行く → 行こうと思っています |
How to use it
States one's OWN intention. The form 「思っている」 indicates the plan has existed for a while.
- An important distinction: 「ようと思う」 = just thought of it while speaking; 「ようと思っている」 = already decided beforehand and still holds that intention.
- The subject must be first person. Talking about someone else requires 「思っている」: 「彼は留学しようと思っている」 — you don't say 「彼は留学しようと思う」.
- Softer than 「つもりだ」 (a firm intention) and 「ことにする」 (already decided).
Examples
今日は早く寝ようと思います。
I think I will go to bed early today.
来年、日本に留学しようと思っています。
I am thinking of studying in Japan next year.
Keep in mind
- Conjugate to the volitional form before 「と思う」.
- For someone else, 「思っている」 is required.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong彼は留学しようと思う。
He is planning to study abroad.
Correct彼は留学しようと思っている。
Talking about someone else's plan requires 「思っている」.
-
Wrong明日は早く寝ろうと思います。
I plan to go to bed early tomorrow.
Correct明日は早く寝ようと思います。
The volitional form of the group 2 (ichidan) verb 「寝る」 is 「寝よう」 (drop る, add よう); 「寝ろう」 confuses it with the imperative form 「寝ろ」 with う attached.
Exam tips
- 「(よ)うと思う」 = intend to; for someone else, use 「思っている」.
