| Adding an item | コーヒーをください。それと、水も。 |
How to use it
Adds ANOTHER item to what was just said, usually something suddenly remembered. Colloquial.
- 「それと」 = also, on top of that. Used when you additionally remember one more thing/item: 「パンをください。それと、牛乳も」.
- Colloquial — formal writing uses 「また」「さらに」. Different from 「その上」 (N3-068) in that 「それと」 only lists an addition, without emphasizing degree.
- Not used to connect two nouns within one sentence: 「パンとそれと牛乳」 is wrong; just use 「と」 there.
Examples
買い物に行くつもりです。それと、郵便局にも寄らなければ。
I'm planning to go shopping. Also, I have to stop by the post office.
今日はタコスを作りました。それと、サラダも作りました。
Today I made tacos. I also made a salad.
Keep in mind
- A sentence-initial conjunction, not a particle for connecting nouns.
- Colloquial; written Japanese uses 「また」.
Common mistakes
-
Wrongパンとそれと牛乳を買った。
I bought bread and milk.
Correctパンと牛乳を買った。
「それと」 connects SENTENCES, not nouns within one sentence — just use 「と」 there.
-
Wrong本報告書には結論を記載いたしました。それと、資料も添付いたしました。
In this report I have written the conclusion. Additionally, I have also attached the materials.
Correct本報告書には結論を記載いたしました。また、資料も添付いたしました。
「それと」 is colloquial; this sentence uses the humble honorific 「記載いたしました/添付いたしました」, which already reveals a formal (report) style, so 「また」 should be used instead of 「それと」.
Exam tips
- 「それと」 = also, on top of that (colloquial, connects sentences); to connect nouns just use 「と」.
