How to use it

Adding a reason or characteristic that goes in the same direction as what was just stated.

  • それに adds information that reinforces the previous point: if it's good, it adds another good point; if it's bad, it adds another bad point. It does not express a cause-and-effect relationship like それで.
  • In conversation, それに often corresponds to the listing structure ~し within a single sentence. Both suggest a list that isn't necessarily complete.

Examples

  • This room is spacious. Moreover, it is close to the station.

  • It is cold today. In addition, the wind is strong.

Common mistakes

  • Wrongこの店(みせ)は安(やす)いです。それに、買(か)いました。

    Correctこの店(みせ)は安(やす)いです。それで、ここで買(か)いました。

"Cheap" leads to the result "bought it", so それで should be used. それに requires adding another characteristic in the same direction.

Exam tips

  • If the following sentence has も and adds another reason in the same direction, それに is a strong choice.
