How to use it

States the RESULT drawn after a process or series of events already described. Written style, common in reports.

  • 「その結果」 = the result of that is... The previous sentence must be a PROCESS or an event with an effect, not just any sentence.
  • Neutral regarding good/bad — different from 「せいで」 (only bad) and 「おかげで」 (only good).
  • More formal than 「それで」 (colloquial).

Examples

  • She practiced every day. As a result, she won the tournament.

  • We conducted a survey. As a result, we learned that many people are opposed.

Keep in mind

  • Placed at the start of the following sentence, followed by 「、」.
  • The preceding sentence must describe a process/event leading to the result.

Common mistakes

It's raining. So let's bring an umbrella.

「その結果」 states a result that HAS ALREADY happened; not used for intentions/invitations.

I practiced every day. As a result, I won the championship.

「その結果」 is a conjunction that opens the following sentence — the previous sentence must be finished first.

Exam tips

  • 「その結果」 = as a result (neutral, written); good/bad nuance belongs to 「せいで/おかげで」.
