Verb知っている + わけがない
na-adjective簡単な + わけがない

How to use it

The speaker strongly asserts that something is IMPOSSIBLE to be true or to happen, based on common sense or obvious knowledge.

  • 「~わけがない」 strongly asserts that something CANNOT POSSIBLY be true or happen, based on reasoning or common sense. Stronger than 「~はずがない」.
  • The speaker is nearly certain, usually with obvious evidence.
  • Different from 「~はずがない」: both deny a possibility, but 「わけがない」 is more assertive and emotional; 「はずがない」 relies on reasoning and is more objective.

Examples

  • There’s no way someone as serious as him would tell such a lie.

  • There’s no way all this work can be finished in a single day.

  • With an injured leg, there is no way he can win the match.

Keep in mind

  • In casual speech, this is often shortened to 「わけない」.
  • な-adjectives connect with 「な」, nouns connect with 「の」.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong彼(かれ)が先生(せんせい)だわけがない。

    There's no way he's a teacher.

    Correct彼(かれ)が先生(せんせい)のわけがない。

A noun connects to 「わけがない」 with 「の」 (or である), not 「だ」.

  • Wrong彼(かれ)がそんなことを言(い)うわけではない。

There's no way he'd say something like that.

    Correct彼(かれ)がそんなことを言(い)うわけがない。

"There's no way he'd say" uses 「わけがない」; 「わけではない」 means "not necessarily" (completely different).

  • Wrong彼(かれ)が来(こ)ないわけがないと思(おも)うが、少(すこ)し心配(しんぱい)だ。

It's not that he definitely won't come, but I'm still a bit worried.

    Correct彼(かれ)が来(こ)ないわけではないが、少(すこ)し心配(しんぱい)だ。

"Not necessarily not…" is 「わけではない」; 「わけがない」 is a flat denial.

  • Wrong簡単(かんたん)わけがない。

There's no way it's that simple.

    Correct簡単(かんたん)なわけがない。

    A na-adjective connects through 「な」.

Exam tips

  • 「わけがない」 = there's no way (assertive); don't confuse it with 「わけではない」 (not necessarily).
