How to use it
Expresses a deliberate effort to make an action happen (or to avoid it); the form 「ようにしている」 emphasizes that the effort is being maintained.
- 「~ようにする」 expresses a CONSCIOUS EFFORT to achieve or maintain an action, usually aiming for improvement or a habit. It emphasizes the process of effort, not a one-time decisive decision.
- Different from 「~ことにする」 (a one-time decisive decision): 「ようにする」 is a GRADUAL, ongoing effort.
- The form 「~ようにしている」 emphasizes maintaining the effort as a habit.
Examples
毎日野菜を食べるようにしています。
I try to eat vegetables every day.
約束を忘れないように、メモするようにしている。
So as not to forget appointments, I make a habit of taking notes.
健康のために、毎日野菜を食べるようにしています。

Keep in mind
- Used with verbs describing an action that can be controlled.
- Distinct from 「ようになる」 (a natural result of change, not an effort).
Common mistakes
-
Wrong練習して、日本語が話せるようにする。
I practice so that I become able to speak Japanese.
Correct練習して、日本語が話せるようになる。
The result "become able to speak" (a change in ability) uses 「ようになる」; 「ようにする」 is an active effort.
-
Wrong甘い物を食べるようにしないでいる。
I'm trying not to eat sweets.
Correct甘い物を食べないようにしている。
The negative goes inside the clause: 「Vない + ようにする」 (trying not to eat sweets).
-
Wrong来月、国へ帰るようにします。
I've decided to return to my country next month.
Correct来月、国へ帰ることにします。
Returning to one's country is a one-time decisive decision → use ~ことにする. ~ようにする is only for a repeated effort.
-
Wrong毎日、漢字を練習したようにしています。
I try to practice kanji every day.
Correct毎日、漢字を練習するようにしています。
Before ようにする must be the DICTIONARY form or the ない form, not the た form.
Exam tips
- An active effort → 「ようにする」; a natural change of result → 「ようになる」.
