How to use it
States a WIDE range of time, space, or quantity that something spans. Written style.
- 「Nにわたって」 = throughout the whole of N: 「工事は三年にわたって続いた」「調査は広範囲にわたった」.
- The range must be WIDE — 「一時間にわたって」 sounds fine when emphasizing length, but 「五分にわたって」 sounds odd.
- As a modifier it is 「にわたる+N」: 「五十キロにわたる道路」. Different from 「を通じて」 (throughout a span, emphasizing continuity).
Examples
This construction continued over three years.
A road stretching fifty kilometers will be newly built.
Keep in mind
- The range must be wide/long enough.
- As a modifier, use 「
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
I spoke for five minutes.
Correct
「にわたって」 is not used when the range is too short.
-
Wrong
The fifty-kilometer-long road construction is still continuing.
Correct
Modifying a noun uses 「にわたる」, not 「にわたって」.
Exam tips
- 「にわたって」 = throughout a wide range; as a modifier, 「にわたる+N」.
