How to use it

At N2, 「ながら」 carries a CONCESSIVE meaning: knowing/being in state A, yet still doing B, which conflicts with A.

  • Concessive meaning: 「知っていながら、教えてくれなかった」 (knew it but didn't tell me). Adding 「も」 makes the concessive nuance clearer: 「狭いながらも、居心地のいい部屋」.
  • Different from the SIMULTANEOUS meaning learned at N4 (「音楽を聞きながら勉強する」): distinguish by whether the two clauses contradict each other.
  • The concessive meaning can attach to both adjectives and nouns, while the simultaneous meaning only attaches to the masu-stem of a verb.

Examples

  • He knew the answer, yet he would not tell me.

  • Small though it is, it is a sunny room.

  • Small though it is, the room is comfortable.

Keep in mind

  • Both clauses must share the same subject.
  • If there's a conflict → concessive; if not → simultaneous.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong彼(かれ)が話(はな)しながら、私(わたし)は聞(き)いた。

He was talking while I was listening.

    Correct彼(かれ)は話(はな)しながら、資料(しりょう)を配(くば)った。

Both clauses of 「ながら」 must share the same subject.

  • Wrong知(し)るながら、教(おし)えてくれなかった。

Even though he knew, he didn't tell me.

    Correct知(し)っていながら、教(おし)えてくれなかった。

The verb attaches to the masu-stem (here, 「知ってい」).

  • Wrong音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)きながらも、勉強(べんきょう)した。

I studied while listening to music.

    Correct音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)きながら、勉強(べんきょう)した。

For two SIMULTANEOUS actions, use 「ながら」; 「ながらも」 carries a concessive meaning (although…still).

  • Wrong狭(せま)いながらも、住(す)みにくい。

Although it's small, it's still hard to live in.

    Correct狭(せま)いながらも、住(す)みやすい。

The second clause must be CONTRARY to what A suggests (small → one would expect it to be hard to live in, but it's actually easy).

  • Wrongテレビを見(み)ながらも、ソファに座(すわ)っています。

I'm sitting on the sofa while watching TV.

    Correctテレビを見(み)ながら、ソファに座(すわ)っています。

ながらも carries a CONTRASTIVE meaning ("although ~, still ~"). Sitting on the sofa and watching TV are two perfectly compatible things, with nothing contradictory to emphasize — they're just two ordinary simultaneous actions (ながら).

  • Wrong知(し)っていたながらも、言(い)いませんでした。

Even though I already knew, I didn't say anything.

    Correct知(し)っていながらも、言(い)いませんでした。

ながらも attaches after the masu form (with ます dropped), not after the た form. 知っています → 知ってい + ながらも.

Exam tips

  • 「ながら(も)」 at N2 = although… still; the two clauses conflict, same subject.
