How to use it

States that an item, amount of time, or cost is necessary, convenient, or suitable for a purpose.

  • In the sense of usage, の turns the action into a noun, and に marks the purpose. What follows is usually 使う, 便利だ, 必要だ, or かかる.
  • This pattern is completely different from ~のに meaning "although": the purpose/usage のに doesn't connect two contrasting events but describes usage, necessity, or cost.

Examples

  • These scissors are convenient for cutting paper.

  • It takes twenty minutes to walk to the station.

Keep in mind

  • Only use the dictionary form before のに when expressing purpose/usage: 読むのに, 運ぶのに.

Common mistakes

  • Wrongこの本(ほん)は漢字(かんじ)を調(しら)べるため便利(べんり)です。

    Correctこの本(ほん)は漢字(かんじ)を調(しら)べるのに便利(べんり)です。

When 便利だ follows and you're evaluating usage, use Vるのに; ため lacks に and sounds unnatural in this structure.

Exam tips

  • If 便利・必要・使う・かかる follows the blank, think of Vるのに.
