Meaningaccording to…; in response to… (adjusting to fit)

Forming it

Noun
Noun (modifier)

How to use it

States that B changes/is adjusted to FIT A (varies according to A). Formal.

  • 「~に応じて」 = "B changes to fit A, depending on A". A is usually something that varies
  • As a modifier (modifying a noun), use 「に応じた + N」.
  • Close to 「によって」 (depending on), but 「に応じて」 emphasizes ADJUSTING to match; 「に基づいて」 = based on a fixed basis.

Examples

  • Taxes change according to income.

  • We prepare plans according to the customer’s requests.

Keep in mind

  • Attaches to a noun.
  • A is a factor that can vary/have multiple levels.

Common mistakes

He was given work suited to his ability.

    As a modifier (modifying a noun), use 「に応じた + N」, not 「に応じての」.

Handle it based on the law.

"Based on a fixed basis" (law) uses 「に基づいて」; 「に応じて」 is used when B varies according to A.

Exam tips

  • 「に応じて」 = depending on (adjusting to fit); as a modifier, 「に応じた+N」.
