How to use it
States the factor that determines a difference, or indicates the agent in a passive sentence.
- Meaning 1 — DEPENDING ON: 「国によって習慣が違います」(customs differ depending on the country). The sentence ending is usually 違う・変わる・いろいろだ. This is the meaning most often tested at N4.
- Meaning 2 — AGENT in a passive sentence, especially for creative/constructive acts: 「この寺は八百年前に建てられました」→ if you want to state who did it, use 「~によって建てられました」. Here によって replaces に because the subject is the creator of the thing.
- Meaning 3 — MEANS, "by way of": 「話し合いによって問題を解決しました」(solved the problem through discussion). This meaning is formal, leaning toward written language.
- The nominal form 「~による N」: 「地震による被害」(damage caused by an earthquake). When による modifies a noun, よって changes to よる.
- Meaning 4 — CAUSE (the most common use of this pattern, easily confused with the Means meaning above): 「地震によって、多くの家が壊れた」(due to the earthquake, many houses were damaged). 「によって」 can only connect to a NOUN — to connect a CLAUSE, turn the verb/adjective into a nominalized form and add 「こと」: 「努力することによって成功した」(succeeded thanks to effort), NOT 「努力するによって」. Formal writing also shortens 「によって」 to 「により」: 「地震により、被害が出た」.
Examples
国によって食べ物の味が違います。
The taste of food differs from country to country.
人によって考え方はいろいろです。
Ways of thinking vary from person to person.
この寺は有名な人によって建てられました。

Keep in mind
- によって is written/formal language. In everyday conversation, saying 「国が違うと習慣も違います」 sounds more natural.
- Don't confuse this with ~について (about ~, topic) — this is a pair Vietnamese learners often mix up since both start with に.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong日本の文化によって話しました。
I talked about Japanese culture.
Correct日本の文化について話しました。
To talk ABOUT a topic, use について. によって means "depending on/by" — the two patterns are quite different even though both start with に.
-
Wrong地震によって被害が大きかったです。
The damage from the earthquake was very great.
Correct地震による被害が大きかったです。
When directly modifying a NOUN, によって must change to による.
-
Wrong努力するによって成功した。
Thanks to effort, I succeeded.
Correct努力することによって成功した。
To connect a clause, 「ことによって」 must be used.
-
Wrong地震によっての被害が大きい。
The damage caused by the earthquake was great.
Correct地震による被害が大きい。
As a modifier, use 「による」, not 「によっての」.
Exam tips
- If the sentence ends with 違います/変わります/いろいろです → fill in によって.
