How to use it
The noun-modifying form of 「~からある/からする」: placed after a quantity expression and before a noun.
- 「~からの+N」 is the MODIFYING form of 「からある/からする」: it emphasizes a large quantity and directly modifies the following noun.
- Completely different from the ordinary 「N から の N」 (indicating origin, e.g. 「日本からの手紙」 = a letter from Japan) — this N1 pattern MUST follow a QUANTITY expression.
- Often used to describe scale: number of people, amount of money, number of years.
Examples
会場には三万人からの人が集まった。
A crowd of fully thirty thousand gathered at the venue.
この橋は十年からの歳月をかけて完成した。
This bridge took a full ten years to complete.
Keep in mind
- Must come after a number + counter.
- 「からの」 is always followed by a noun.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong日本からの手紙は三万人からの人が読んだ。
As many as thirty thousand people read that letter.
Correct三万人からの人がその手紙を読んだ。
「日本からの手紙」 is just から+の (origin), not this pattern; the N1 pattern must follow a QUANTITY expression.
-
Wrong三万人からのが集まった。
As many as thirty thousand people gathered.
Correct三万人からの人が集まった。
A NOUN is mandatory after 「からの」.
Exam tips
- 「quantity+からの+N」 = "as much/many as..." (modifier); different from 「日本からの手紙」 (origin).
