How to use it
Placed after an amount of money to emphasize an impressively high price: "costing as much as...". Written style.
- 「~からする」 follows an AMOUNT OF MONEY to emphasize a high price: "costing as much as...". Same family as 「~からある」 (quantity/size).
- DO NOT confuse it with 「~からすると/~からすれば」 ("judging from...") — that pattern states a BASIS for a judgment, and is completely different.
- The following clause usually states an astonishing expensiveness.
Examples
This watch is a luxury item costing a full million yen.
Paintings costing a hundred thousand yen apiece are on display.
Keep in mind
- Used only with amounts of money.
- Clearly distinguish it from 「からすると」 (basis for judgment).
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
Judging from his attitude, he seems to be opposed.
Correct
Stating a BASIS for judgment uses 「~からすると/からすれば」; 「~からする」 is only used for prices.
-
Wrong
This building is as tall as forty stories.
Correct
Quantity/size uses 「~からある」; 「~からする」 is reserved for prices.
Exam tips
- 「からする」 = "costing as much as..." (prices only); DIFFERENT from 「からすると」 (basis for judgment).
