How to use it

States two opposing possibilities then draws a shared conclusion; usable with both nouns and verbs. Slightly colloquial.

  • 「~にしろ~にしろ」 states two opposing possibilities then affirms a conclusion that applies to both.
  • More flexible than 「であれ~であれ」 (nouns only): 「にしろ」 can also attach to verbs/adjectives.
  • Nearly synonymous with 「~にせよ~にせよ」 (N1-091); 「にしろ」 is more colloquial, 「にせよ」 more literary.

Examples

  • Hot or cold, you should exercise every day.

  • Whether I pass or fail, I gave it everything.

Keep in mind

  • Attaches directly to a noun or to the plain form.
  • The clause that follows can also be advice (unlike 「うが~うが」).

Common mistakes

  • Wrong暑(あつ)いにしろ、運動(うんどう)しよう。

Whether it's hot or cold, let's exercise.

    Correct暑(あつ)いにしろ寒(さむ)いにしろ、運動(うんどう)しよう。

This pattern comes in a PAIR of two opposing clauses; a single clause uses 「~にしても」.

  • Wrong行(い)くにしろ行(い)かないにしろが、連絡(れんらく)して。

Whether you go or not, please get in touch.

    Correct行(い)くにしろ行(い)かないにしろ、連絡(れんらく)して。

「にしろ」 attaches directly, without adding a particle after it.

Exam tips

  • 「にしろ~にしろ」 = whether A or B (attaches to N and V too); ≒「にせよ~にせよ」 but more colloquial.
