- 「要するに」 = in short. Used after a LONG passage to sum up the point: 「いろいろ説明したが、要するに、予算が足りないのだ」.
- Different from 「つまり」 (N3-101): 「つまり」 rephrases a single sentence, while 「要するに」 sums up an entire passage; 「要するに」 is also stronger and blunter.
- Because it can sound like judging what someone else said, when summarizing a superior's point use the softer 「つまり~ということでしょうか」.

I explained at length, but in short, the budget is insufficient.

Restating just one sentence uses 「つまり」; 「要するに」 is for a long passage.
-
ผิด(部長の説明の後)要するに、予算がないということですね。
In short, there's no budget, is that right?
ถูก(部長の説明の後)つまり、予算が足りないということでしょうか。
Summarizing a superior's words with 「要するに」 sounds condescending.
เทคนิคการสอบ
