What does ~ながらも mean? Japanese grammar N4
~ながらも means although ~, despite ~.
| Level (estimated, JLPT framework) | N4 |
|---|---|
| Structure | V(ます形) ながらも Aい ながらも N ながらも |
| Romaji | ~ nagara mo |
| Meaning | although ~, despite ~ |
Forming it
| Noun | N + ながらも |
|---|---|
| Verb | V (drop ます) + ながらも |
| i-adjective | Aい + ながらも |
| na-adjective | Aな (drop な) + ながらも |
How to use it
Expresses contrast: the second clause goes against what would normally be expected from the first clause.
- ながらも expresses CONTRAST: 「知っていながらも、何も言いませんでした」(even though he knew, he said nothing). The second clause goes against what the listener would expect from the first clause.
- Key point: don't confuse this with ながら meaning "while ~" (two simultaneous actions, a different N4 pattern): 「音楽を聞きながら勉強します」(studying while listening to music). Same ながら, but adding も completely shifts the meaning to CONTRAST. The character も is the marker to look for.
- Another way to tell them apart by meaning: ながら (simultaneous) requires both actions to happen TOGETHER with the same subject. ながらも (contrast) has the second clause going AGAINST expectation — if replacing it with のに still makes the sentence work, it's ながらも.
- ながらも is a WRITTEN, somewhat formal expression. In everyday conversation, のに or けど sound more natural: 「知っていたのに、何も言いませんでした」. That's why ながらも appears more often in the READING section than in listening.
Examples
彼は答えを知っていながらも、何も言いませんでした。
Although he knew the answer, he said nothing.
この部屋は狭いながらも、とても使いやすいです。
Although this room is small, it is very easy to use.
残念ながら、明日のパーティーには行けません。
Unfortunately, I can't go to tomorrow's party.
Keep in mind
- A very common set phrase: 残念ながら (unfortunately ~) — 「残念ながら、行けません」.
- The short form ながら (without も) can also be used with the contrastive meaning in written language, but adding も makes the meaning clearer.
Common mistakes
-
Wrongテレビを見ながらも、ソファに座っています。
I watched TV while sitting on the sofa.
Correctテレビを見ながら、ソファに座っています。
ながらも carries the meaning of CONTRAST ("even though ~, still ~"). Sitting on the sofa and watching TV are two perfectly compatible activities with nothing contrasting to emphasize — they're just two ordinary simultaneous actions (ながら).
-
Wrong知っていたながらも、言いませんでした。
Even though I already knew, I didn't say anything.
Correct知っていながらも、言いませんでした。
ながらも attaches after the ます form (with ます dropped), not after the た form. 知っています → 知ってい + ながらも.
Exam tips
- Marker to recognize: with も → contrast (translate as "even though ~, but"); without も → simultaneous (translate as "while ~").
- Memorize the set phrase 残念ながら — it appears very frequently in letters/notices in the reading section.
