How to use it
Indicates the PLACE where the action takes place.
- で = place where an ACTION happens: 図書館で勉強します (study AT the library).
- Contrasts with に (place of existence/destination). (I am AT the park — existence) vs 「公園で遊びます」(I play AT the park — action).
- で also indicates MEANS/TOOL: バスで行きます (go by bus), はしで食べます (eat with chopsticks).
Examples
I study at the library.
I go to the office by train.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
Correct
勉強する is an ACTION → the place must use で, not に.
Exam tips
- に vs で is a classic trap pair: remember "に is static, で is active".
