| Modifying a noun | N + についての + N |
How to use it
States the topic of speaking, writing, thinking, or researching.
- について marks the TOPIC of a language/thinking activity: 話す・書く・考える・調べる・研究する・質問する. 「日本の文化について話します」(I will talk about Japanese culture).
- When modifying a noun, の must be added: 「日本についての本」(a book about Japan). Forgetting this の is a very common mistake.
- Vietnamese speakers often mistakenly use を because Vietnamese phrases "talk about something" like an object structure. But 話す in the sense of "talk about a topic" requires について; を + 話す is only used when the object is the actual speech itself (日本語を話します = speak Japanese).
- Don't confuse this with によって (depending on/by). Trick: について can always be translated as "about ~"; によって never can.
Examples
明日、日本の文化について話します。
Tomorrow I will talk about Japanese culture.
この問題について、みんなで考えましょう。
Let's all think about this problem together.
日本の歴史についての本を借りました。
I borrowed a book about Japanese history.
Keep in mind
- A more formal synonym is に関して (N3 and above) — not needed at N4 yet.
- について doesn't go with physical action verbs: you can't say 「本について買います」.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong日本の文化を話します。
I will talk about Japanese culture.
Correct日本の文化について話します。
To talk ABOUT a topic, use について. を + 話す is only correct when the object is the very language being spoken (日本語を話します).
-
Wrong日本について本は面白かったです。
That book about Japan was interesting.
Correct日本についての本は面白かったです。
について cannot directly modify the noun right after it (本) — here there is no other verb for について to attach to (the main predicate 面白かったです modifies 本), so の is required: についての本.
-
Wrong日本の文化についての発表しました。
I gave a presentation about Japanese culture.
Correct日本の文化について発表しました。
「について」 attaches directly to a verb; の is added only when it functions as a modifier for a noun (についての発表).
-
Wrong客について、丁寧に話す。
I speak politely to customers.
Correct客に対して、丁寧に話す。
An attitude directed toward a target uses 「に対して」; 「について」 is for the content topic.
Exam tips
- Remember the pair: について + Verb ↔ についての + Noun.
