How to use it
A negation carrying strong WILL: a commitment or a firm assertion. More formal than 「絶対に」.
- 「決して~ない」 = absolutely will not: 「この秘密は決して誰にも言いません」. The sentence carries the nature of a promise.
- The second clause must be negative 「決して」 alone does not make a complete sentence.
- Different from 「全然/まったく~ない」 (which only describes a degree of "not"): 「決して」 always carries the speaker's will or commitment.
Examples
I will never tell this secret to anyone.
He is a person who never breaks a promise.
Keep in mind
- Must be paired with negation.
- Carries a tone of firm commitment; not used for neutral description.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
I absolutely will not tell.
Correct
「決して」 must go with a negative.
-
Wrong

Correct
For a neutral description of degree, use 「まったく」; 「決して」 carries will/commitment.
