How to use it
Right at the PEAK of doing something, something else interrupts. The interruption is usually a bother.
- 「最中に」 = right in the middle of…: 「会議の最中に、携帯が鳴った」. Emphasizes that the event is at its most active point.
- Only used for ongoing events with a clear peak: 会議・食事・試験・話. Not used for a long drawn-out state: 「夏休みの最中」 sounds odd; use 「夏休み中」 instead.
- Compare: 「ところに」 (right at the moment), 「うちに」 (while still…), 「最中に」 (at the peak, usually interrupted).
Examples
会議の最中に、携帯電話が鳴ってしまった。
My phone rang right in the middle of the meeting.
昼寝をしている最中に、来客があった。

Keep in mind
- The verb must be in the 「ている」 form.
