Object/target

How to use it

Two meanings: (a) directing an attitude/action at a target; (b) contrasting two opposing clauses.

  • Meaning (a) TARGET: 「質問に対して丁寧に答えた」 — the clause after is an attitude/reaction directed at A.
  • Meaning (b) CONTRAST: clause + 「のに対して」 — 「兄は無口なのに対して、弟はよくしゃべる」. This is an OBJECTIVE contrast, without an accompanying feeling (different from 「にひきかえ」 at N1).
  • The modifier form is 「に対する」: 「学生に対する調査」.

Examples

  • He answered the question honestly.

  • Whereas the older brother is quiet, the younger one talks a lot.

Keep in mind

  • A clause must add 「の」 before 「に対して」.
  • The modifying form is 「に対する」.

Common mistakes

My older brother is quiet, whereas my younger brother talks a lot.

    A clause must connect via 「

His attitude toward children is gentle.

    The modifier form uses 「

Exam tips

  • 「に対して」 = toward / in contrast; a clause needs 「の」, the modifier form is 「に対する」.
