~によれば/~によると means according to… (citing information source).
| Level (estimated, JLPT framework) | N3 |
|---|---|
| Structure | N + によれば/によると、~そうだ/らしい/ということだ |
| Romaji | niyoreba/niyoruto |
| Meaning | according to… (citing information source) |
Forming it
| Source | 天気予報 → 天気予報によれば |
|---|---|
| Speaker | 先生 → 先生によると |
How to use it
Cites the source of information about to be stated. The end of the sentence MUST have a reporting marker.
- Fixed pair: 「AによるとBそうだ/らしい/とのことだ」. Missing the ending makes an incomplete sentence — this is the most heavily penalized mistake.
- 「によれば」 and 「によると」 are nearly synonymous; 「によれば」 leans slightly more toward written language.
- A is the SOURCE of information (a newspaper, a forecast, a speaker), not a cause — a cause uses 「によって」 (N3-128).
Examples
天気予報によれば、明日は晴れるそうだ。
According to the forecast, it will be sunny tomorrow.
先生によると、この問題は試験に出ないということだ。
According to the teacher, this problem will not be on the exam.
Keep in mind
- The sentence must end with 「そうだ/らしい/ということだ」.
- Only connects to nouns denoting an information source.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong天気予報によれば、明日は晴れます。
According to the weather forecast, it will be sunny tomorrow.
Correct天気予報によれば、明日は晴れるそうです。
When citing a source, the end of the sentence must have the reporting marker 「そうです」.
-
Wrong大雨によると、電車が止まった。
Due to heavy rain, the train stopped.
Correct大雨によって、電車が止まった。
A cause uses 「によって」; 「によると」 is only used to cite a source of information.
Exam tips
