| Starting the next sentence | |

| Connecting within a sentence | |
How to use it
States a reason in the polite form. Because it's a SUBJECTIVE reason, the clause after is often a suggestion, invitation, or command.
- 「から」 states a subjective reason, so the clause after is ALLOWED to be a command, invitation, or suggestion: 「危ないですから、下がってください」.
- Different from 「ので」: 「ので」 is more objective and softer, suitable when asking permission or explaining to a superior — 「用事がありますので、お先に失礼します」.
- 「ですから」 at the start of a sentence functions as a conjunction meaning “therefore”: 「今日は寒いです。
Examples
It's cold today, so please wear a coat.
The train was late. Therefore, I did not make it to the meeting.
Keep in mind
- In polite spoken Japanese, keep 「です/ます」 before 「から」.
- With someone of higher status, use 「ので」 when giving a reason to ask permission.
Common mistakes
-
I have something to attend to, so please allow me to leave early.
When asking permission from a superior, 「ので」 is softer and more polite than 「から」.
-
Wrong
It's cold, so please put on a jacket.
Correct
Within one sentence, 「ですから」 is only needed once; 「ですから」 stands alone when starting a new sentence.
Exam tips
- 「ですから」 = because… so (subjective, clause after can be a command); with superiors use 「ので」.
