How to use it
States a habit decided and maintained by ONESELF, not an external rule.
- 「ことにしている」 = I have made it a personal rule that... and I still keep it: 「毎朝六時に起きることにしている」.
- Different from 「ことにした」 (a ONE-TIME decision, at a single point in time) — the 「ている」 form is what expresses an ongoing habit.
- Different from 「ことになっている」 (N3-080): that pattern is a rule set by an organization/society, not one's own decision.
Examples
I make it a rule to get up at six every morning.
I make it a rule not to drink coffee late at night.
Keep in mind
- The one who made the decision is the speaker.
- Dropping 「ている」 to get 「ことにした」 loses the sense of habit.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
At this company, the rule is that work ends at 8 o'clock.
A company rule is 「ことになっている」; 「ことにしている」 is a rule the person set for themself.
-
Wrong
I've made it a rule to exercise every day.
Correct
「ことにする」 is a decision made right now; an ongoing habit must use 「ことにしている」.
Exam tips
- 「ことにしている」 = a rule set by ONESELF; an external rule uses 「ことになっている」.
