How to use it
States doing B WITHOUT doing A, or is used to ask/request that someone not do something.
- 「AないでB」 = do B without doing A — A and B share the same subject and happen at the same time: 「傘を持たないで出かけた」.
- Distinguish from 「なくて」: 「ないで」 connects ACTIONS, while 「なくて」 states a REASON — 「バスが来なくて遅刻した」 (I was late because the bus didn't come).
- 「ずに」 is the written-language version of 「ないで」: 「何も言わずに帰った」.
Examples
I went to school without eating breakfast.
Don't worry, please rest well.
Keep in mind
- Connects with the ない form: 「食べないで」, not 「食べなくて」 when the meaning is “without doing”.
- 「なくて」 is used for stating a reason.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
I went out without bringing an umbrella.
Correct
“Do B without doing A” uses 「ないで」; 「なくて」 is only used to state a reason.
-
Wrong
The bus didn't come, so I was late.
Correct
This is a REASON, so 「なくて」 must be used.
Exam tips
- 「ないで」 = without doing (connects actions); a reason uses 「なくて」, written language uses 「ずに」.
