| Level (estimated, JLPT framework) | N2 |
|---|---|
| Structure | N + から言うと/から言って/から言えば |
| Romaji | karaiuto/karaitte |
| Meaning | speaking in terms of…; from the standpoint of… (stating the angle of evaluation) |
Forming it
| Aspect | 値段 → 値段から言うと |
|---|---|
| Experience | 経験 → 経験から言って |
How to use it
Picks an ASPECT (price, taste, experience...) and then gives an assessment based on that aspect.
- 「Nから言うと」 = in terms of N: 「値段から言うと、この商品が一番お得だ」.
- Only connects to a NOUN denoting an aspect or basis; it doesn't connect to a person's standpoint — 「私から言うと」 sounds odd; use 「私に言わせれば」 there instead.
- Three closely related patterns: 「から言うと」 (aspect) — 「から見ると」 (viewpoint) — 「からすると」 (inference from data).
Examples
値段から言うと、この商品が一番お得です。
In terms of price, this product is the best value.
これまでの経験から言って、この計画は難しいと思う。
Speaking from past experience, I think this plan is difficult.
Keep in mind
- Only connects to a noun.
- The following clause is an assessment, not a command.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong私から言うと、その案は無理だ。
In my opinion, that plan isn't feasible.
Correct私に言わせれば、その案は無理だ。
For a personal opinion, use 「に言わせれば」; 「から言うと」 states an aspect.
-

In terms of price, please buy this one.
Correct値段から言うと、これが一番いいです。
The second clause is an assessment, not a request.
