How to use it
States a conclusion first, then explains the REASON in the following sentence. Written, expository tone.
- A fixed pair: 「というのは~からだ/ためだ」. Missing 「から/ため」 at the end leaves the sentence incomplete.
- Functions the same as 「なぜなら~からだ」 (N3-121), but 「というのは」 sounds softer, more like a narrative.
- Don't confuse it with 「AというのはBことだ」 (N3-111, DEFINITION): distinguish by the sentence ending — 「からだ」 is a reason, 「ことだ」 is a definition.
Examples
彼は非常に疲れている。というのは、昨夜遅くまで車を運転していたからだ。
He is very tired. That is because he was driving until late last night.
この店はおすすめです。というのは、料理がおいしく、値段も手ごろだからです。
I recommend this restaurant, because the food is good and the prices are reasonable.
Keep in mind
- Ends with 「からだ/ためだ」.
- Ending with 「ことだ」 is instead a definition pattern, completely different.

Wrong彼は疲れている。というのは、昨夜遅くまで運転していた。
