Meaningonly have to…; merely… that's all

Forming it

Verb (ta-form)言った + までだ
Verb (solution)やり直す + までだ

How to use it

Two meanings: (a) if it doesn't work out, the only option left is A; (b) simply just A, nothing more.

  • Meaning (a): 「Vるまでだ」 = if it doesn't work out, the only option left is A — 「だめならやり直すまでだ」 (if it fails, I'll just start over). A decisive, ready tone.
  • Meaning (b): 「Vたまでだ」 = simply did A, nothing more (no other intention) — 「事実を言ったまでだ」 (I merely stated the facts). Used to explain oneself/defend one's actions.
  • Distinguish the two meanings by the verb FORM: dictionary form → (a), past (た) form → (b).

Examples

  • If it fails, I’ll simply start over from scratch.

  • I wasn’t blaming anyone — I merely stated the facts.

Keep in mind

  • Vる → a solution; Vた → a justification.
  • A firm, decisive tone.

Common mistakes

  • Wrongだめなら、あきらめますまでだ。

If it doesn't work out, I'll just give up, that's all.

    Correctだめなら、あきらめるまでだ。

「までだ」 attaches to the DICTIONARY form of the verb, not the 「ます」 form.

  • Wrong飲(の)み放題(ほうだい)は9時(じ)までだから、やり直(なお)すまでだ。

    All-you-can-drink is only until 9 o'clock.

    Correct飲(の)み放題(ほうだい)は9時(じ)までだ。

「9時までだ」 uses 「まで」 to indicate a time LIMIT, and is not this grammar pattern.

Exam tips

  • 「Vるまでだ」 = the only option left; 「Vたまでだ」 = simply did it (used to explain oneself).
