How to use it
States what should have been done; implies REGRET or reproach because reality turned out otherwise.
- 「~ば~ものを」 = if only A, then B would have happened. 「ものを」 ends the sentence with a tone of REGRET/reproach.
- Often left trailing after 「ものを」, leaving behind a tone of resentment: 「早く言えばよかったものを」.
- Close to 「~ばよかったのに」, but 「ものを」 is more literary and carries a heavier reproachful tone.
Examples
If only you’d consulted me sooner, I could have helped.
A single apology would have settled it, yet he said nothing.
Keep in mind
- The first clause is in the ば form.
- Ends with 「ものを」, often left unfinished.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
If only you'd consulted me sooner — but it all worked out fine anyway.
Correct
「ものを」 carries a tone of REGRET because reality was NOT that way; a good outcome contradicts that.
-
Wrong
If only you'd consulted me, I could have helped.
Correct
The first clause must be in the ば-FORM (相談すれば).
Exam tips
