Forming it

Noun感謝 + こそすれ
Verb (masu-stem)増え + こそすれ

How to use it

Strongly affirms A, then FLATLY DENIES the opposite. Formal written style.

  • 「~こそすれ」 = "only A, and absolutely not B". The following clause MUST negate the opposite.
  • Common pairs: 「感謝こそすれ、恨むことはない」, 「増えこそすれ、減ることはない」.
  • Different from 「こそあれ」 (although A, ...): 「こそすれ」 flatly rules out the opposing clause.

Examples

  • I feel nothing but gratitude — certainly no resentment.

  • The burden will only grow; it certainly won’t shrink.

Keep in mind

  • The following clause MUST be negative.
  • Verbs use the masu-stem.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong感謝(かんしゃ)こそすれ、恨(うら)んでいる。

I feel only gratitude, and yet I still resent it.

    Correct感謝(かんしゃ)こそすれ、恨(うら)んではいない。

The clause after 「こそすれ」 MUST negate the opposite.

  • Wrong増(ふ)えるこそすれ、減(へ)らない。

    It only increases, never decreases.

    Correct増(ふ)えこそすれ、減(へ)らない。

The verb uses the MASU-STEM (増え), not the dictionary form.

Exam tips

  • 「こそすれ」 = only A, not B; the following clause must be negative, verbs use the masu-stem.
