How to use it
Pushes through a clear obstacle to still get something done. Emphasizes the subject's strong will.
- 「Nをおして」 = despite N. N is a concrete obstacle: 病気 (illness), けが (injury), 疲れ (fatigue), 反対 (opposition), 悪天候 (bad weather).
- The following clause is a deliberate, effortful action: 「病気をおして会議に出席した」 (despite being ill, [he] attended the meeting).
- A stronger version is 「~を押し切って」 (brushing aside opposition). 「をおして」 leans more toward pushing through despite difficulty.
Examples
病気をおして、彼は会議に出席した。
Despite being ill, he attended the meeting.
周囲の反対をおして、計画を実行した。
They carried out the plan despite opposition.
Keep in mind
- The particle is 「を」: 「病気をおして」, not 「病気におして」.
- The accompanying noun is limited — it cannot be combined freely with just any obstacle.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong病気におして出席した。
Correct病気をおして出席した。
The obstacle being overcome uses を, not に: をおして.
Exam tips
- 「をおして」 = despite (illness/opposition) still doing it; uses 「を」.
