How to use it
A subjective remark that something is tinged with / leans toward a certain quality — spoken language.
- っぽい attaches to say "tinged with ~, leaning toward ~": 「子どもっぽい」(childish, immature), 「白っぽいシャツ」(a whitish shirt).
- The nuance is usually NEGATIVE, carrying a critical tone — this is the key distinction from らしい (praising). The classic contrasting pair: 「子どもらしい」= innocent and truly childlike (PRAISE, and the subject is actually a child) ↔ 「子どもっぽい」= childish, immature (CRITICISM, and the subject is usually an adult). Vietnamese learners translate both as "like a child" so they get mixed up a lot.
- Attached after V(masu stem), it means "prone to/easily ~": 「忘れっぽい」(forgetful), 「怒りっぽい」(quick to anger). This is a group of words describing personality that's very commonly used in conversation.
- っぽい conjugates like an I-ADJECTIVE and is casual SPOKEN language — not used in formal writing.
Examples
あの人は大人なのに子どもっぽいです。
That person is an adult but acts childish.
母は最近忘れっぽくなりました。
My mother has become forgetful recently.
白っぽいシャツを買いました。
I bought a whitish shirt.
Keep in mind
- Quick comparison of the group of four: ように (written, comparison) — みたい (spoken, comparison/guess) — らしい (genuinely characteristic, praise) — っぽい (tinged with, criticism).
- With colors, っぽい is neutral, not critical: 白っぽい (whitish), 黒っぽい (blackish).
Common mistakes
-
Wrongこの子は子どもっぽくてかわいいです。
This kid is truly childlike and innocent, so cute.
Correctこの子は子どもらしくてかわいいです。
っぽい carries a CRITICAL nuance (immature) and is used for an adult acting like a child; to praise a child for being appropriately innocent, use らしい.
-
Wrong母は忘れっぽいになりました。
My mother has become forgetful.
Correct母は忘れっぽくなりました。
っぽい conjugates like an I-ADJECTIVE → 「~くなる」, not 「~になる」.
Exam tips
- らしい/っぽい trap: praising → らしい, criticizing → っぽい.
