วิธีใช้

  • Meaning 1 — CHARACTERISTIC (the N4 focus): 「男らしい人」(a manly man), 「今日は春らしい天気です」(today's weather is truly spring-like). The pattern 'N らしい N' means having the qualities typical of N — usually with a PRAISING nuance. This sentence is about QUALITY and asserts nothing about the actual truth of someone's occupation or identity.
  • Distinguish it from ように/みたい: 「彼は先生のようです」・「彼は先生みたいです」= he looks/sounds like a teacher (comparison, inference). 「先生らしい先生」= a teacher who is TRULY a teacher (has the qualities of the profession). Note: 「彼は先生らしいです」 on its own is easily understood in meaning 2 (I hear he is a teacher), so to express the characteristic meaning use the 「N らしい N」 form or 「N らしくない」.
  • Meaning 2 — INFERENCE from information HEARD from someone else: 「田中さんは来月結婚するらしいです」(I heard that Tanaka is getting married next month). Unlike みたい (I see it and guess myself) — らしい is information from an outside source, and the speaker doesn't take full responsibility for it.
  • らしい conjugates like an i-ADJECTIVE: 春らしくない (not spring-like), 男らしかった.

ตัวอย่าง

  • Today's weather is nice and truly spring-like.

  • Mr. Tanaka is a student who really acts like a student.

  • I hear that Mr. Yamada is getting married next month.

ข้อควรจำ

  • The negative of the "characteristic" meaning is very commonly used for mild criticism: 「先生らしくないですね」 (doesn't act like a teacher at all).
  • After a noun, らしい has NO の (like みたい): 男らしい, not 男のらしい.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • ผิด春(はる)らしいな天気(てんき)ですね。

What truly spring-like weather, isn't it?

    ถูก春(はる)らしい天気(てんき)ですね。

らしい is an い-adjective, so it connects directly to a noun and does NOT add な (unlike な-adjectives such as 静かな天気).

  • ผิด男(おとこ)のらしい人(ひと)です。

    A very manly person.

    ถูก男(おとこ)らしい人(ひと)です。

After a noun, らしい has no の (unlike のような).
