วิธีใช้

Used in casual conversation as a spoken replacement for 「~と(言う)」「~という」「~とは」 when passing along hearsay, asking back to confirm something the other person just said, or introducing a word or topic for explanation.

  • In spoken Japanese, 「~って」 is an extremely common contraction of the quotation and naming expressions 「~と(言う)」「~という」「~とは」 (distinct from 「Vて → Vって」 used for casual requests like 「待って」).
  • Usage 1 — Reporting what someone else said (replacing 「~と言っていた」「~と聞いた」): Placed at the end of a sentence to relay what you heard: “I heard that…”, “He/She said that…” (e.g., 「来週また寒くなるって」— I heard it’s going to get cold again next week).
  • Usage 2 — Introducing a topic or asking back to confirm (replacing 「~とは」「~というのは」): Placed after a noun or phrase to bring it up for discussion or echo a word the listener just used: 「黒字ってどういう意味?」 (What does “in the black” mean?), 「これって誰の傘?」 (Whose umbrella is this?).
  • Usage 3 — Naming or identifying a noun (replacing 「~という」): Connects two nouns as 「N1 + って + N2」 meaning “an N2 called / named N1” (e.g., 「佐藤さんって人から連絡があったよ」— Someone named Sato contacted us).
  • PRAGMATIC WARNING: Although ubiquitous in everyday conversation, 「~って」 is still casual speech (register: casual). When reporting to superiors, writing business emails, or speaking formally, NEVER use 「~って」; use the full polite forms 「~とおっしゃっていました」「~とのことです」 or 「~という/~とは/~は」.
