Structureもう + V ました
まだ + V ていません

Meaningnot yet ~ / already ~

How to use it

Express a completed state or one not yet completed.

  • もう + past = "already ~": 「もう食べました。」
  • まだ + ていません = "not yet ~": 「まだ食べていません。」
  • VERY COMMON MISTAKE: answering "not yet" with まだ食べませんでした is WRONG — you must use まだ食べていません (still haven't, but might later).
  • まだ can also mean "still": 「まだ時間があります。」

Examples

  • Have you eaten lunch yet?

  • No, I have not eaten yet.

Common mistakes

  • Wrongまだ食(た)べませんでした。

    Correctまだ食(た)べていません。

"Still haven't" uses ていません; ませんでした means "did not eat" (and won't anymore).

Exam tips

  • まだ + ていません is a very common trap in the N5 exam.
