| Level (estimated, JLPT framework) | N4 |

| Structure | Vた + ところだ |
| Romaji | ~ ta tokoro da |
| Meaning | have just finished doing ~ |
How to use it
Saying that an action has just finished right before the moment of speaking.
- Vたところだ comes right after the end point of an action; the time gap must feel very short to the speaker. The adverbs たった今 and ちょうど often accompany it.
- Unlike Vたばかりだ, ところ emphasizes a moment truly close to the present. If several days have passed but the speaker still feels it's "recent," ばかり fits better.
Examples
たった今、駅に着いたところです。
I have just arrived at the station.
会議が終わったところなので、今から戻ります。
The meeting has just ended, so I will head back now.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong三年前に日本へ来たところです。
Correct三年前に日本へ来ました。
Three years is no longer a "just now" moment; ~たところ doesn't fit a clearly distant past marker.
Exam tips
- たった今/ちょうど今 almost always point directly to Vたところ.
