How to use it

Emphasizing that an action is happening right at the moment being discussed.

  • ~ているところだ is a cross-section right in the middle of an action. It fits when being asked, being called, or needing to say you're in the middle of doing something.
  • Not used with an ongoing state that has no clear progression, such as 知っている or 結婚している. These verbs describe a state, not an action currently in progress.

Examples

  • I am currently looking into that issue.

  • I am in the middle of cooking, so I will call later.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong私(わたし)は田中(たなか)さんを知(し)っているところです。

    Correct私(わたし)は田中(たなか)さんを知(し)っています。

知っている is the state of "knowing," not an action with a midpoint, so ところ is not added.

Exam tips

  • 今/ちょうど plus an action in progress usually points to ~ているところ.
