How to use it

After finishing A, one discovers/learns B — B is an unexpected finding, not something one intended to do next.

  • 「Vたところ」 = did A, and it turned out B. The second clause is always something DISCOVERED, in the た form: 「先生に聞いたところ、試験は来週だそうだ」.
  • Polite written style, often used in reports. The colloquial equivalent is 「~たら」.
  • Don't confuse it with 「Vるところ」 (about to do) and 「Vたところだ」 (just finished doing) — same word 「ところ」 but a completely different function.

Examples

  • When I checked with the teacher, I found the exam is next week.

  • When I called my friend, she was not home.

  • When I cleaned the room, the key I thought I had lost turned up.

Keep in mind

  • The following clause must state a known result — not a command or an expression of will.
  • Attaches to the た form.

Common mistakes

Once you're done checking, please write the report.

The second clause must be something DISCOVERED; a request/command sentence is not used.

    I just left the house.

「たところだ」 (just finished doing) connects directly to the た form, no 「る」.

Once you're done checking, please report.

The second clause is something discovered; a request sentence is not used.

I just arrived at the station.

「たところだ」 (just) connects directly to the た form.

Exam tips

  • 「Vたところ」 = did A and discovered B (written); colloquially use 「たら」.
