How to use it
States a possibility that even the speaker finds somewhat surprising. 「もしかすると」 gives the listener advance notice.
- This is a fixed pair: opening with 「もしかすると/もしかしたら」 requires 「かもしれない」 (or 「のではないか」) at the end.
- 「もしかすると」 only reinforces the "who knows" nuance — the sentence is still correct without it, but including it lets the listener know right away this is a vague guess.
- Degree of certainty: 「きっと」 (very sure) > 「たぶん」 (fairly sure) > 「もしかすると~かもしれない」 (not very sure).
Examples
もしかすると、彼は道に迷っているかもしれない。
He might possibly be lost.
もしかしたら、この店はもう閉まっているかもしれません。
Perhaps this shop has already closed.
Keep in mind
- The sentence must end with 「かもしれない」.
- A noun connects directly with 「かもしれない」.
Common mistakes
-

-
Wrongもしかすると、彼はきっと来ます。
He might definitely come.
Correctもしかすると、彼は来ないかもしれません。
